For architects

Before the handrail goes into the drawings.

What we usually go through with architects before a handrail ends up in a specification. Short, and in roughly the order the questions tend to come.

When specifying

Worth considering.

Profile and grip

Choose the profile for the hand that will hold it. The round comes in 40, 42, 45 and 50 mm, and over thirty profiles are in production. If none of them fits, we draw and make yours.

Order profile samples

Species and finish

Twelve species, matched to the floor or stair you have already chosen. The finish decides how the run ages — untreated, oil, lacquer, white paint or Rubio hardwax oil in four colours. Screens render timber differently, so see it in the hand before you specify.

Indoors and out

Outdoors, rain, sun and frost work on a handrail all year. Accoya takes up far less moisture and moves little with the seasons; mahogany and larch are durable without modification. Mahogany works indoors too, so a run can continue in the same timber from inside to out.

About Accoya

Lighting

An LED strip can be milled into the handrail so the light falls on the stair. Power comes in through a bracket or at the end of the rail — so decide where the handrail starts and stops before the cabling goes into the wall.

Leather

Round handrails can be wrapped in leather. The rail underneath is beech, and the leather is wrapped and stitched by hand.

End details and fittings

The end detail is where a handrail is either finished or merely stopped. Which ones are possible depends on the profile — rounds can take sleeves and fully rounded ends, mouldings are rounded or profile-milled.

Curved stairs

A curved handrail is shaped to the stair's actual geometry, not the nearest standard radius. For curved and made-to-order runs, we take the measurements on site ourselves.

Enquiry

This helps us answer.

None of it is required to start — a question is enough. But the more of this there is, the sooner we can tell you what is possible and what it costs.

  • A stair drawing, a sketch or a photo with measurements
  • Species and finish, or the ones you are weighing up
  • Profile, if chosen
  • Whether the handrail is outdoors, lit or leather-wrapped
  • Roughly when it is needed on site

Tell us what you are working on and we will tell you what is possible, what it costs and how long it takes. If you would like to feel the material first, order samples.
